CLS Graduate Student Editorial Proctorship

This proctorship offers a unique opportunity for graduate students who are interested in the field of publishing and peer-reviewed publications. This experience with journals and editing widens the proctor’s experience in the academic world and develops additional competencies that will widen his portfolio for various careers in higher education.

CLS Graduate Student Editorial Proctorship

 

The Center for Language Studies is pleased to offer the year-long CLS Graduate Student Editorial Proctorship. The academic market for journals and publishing in modern languages and language pedagogy is extensive. This proctorship offers a unique opportunity for graduate students who are interested in the field of publishing. In addition to training that is already part of the graduate curriculum, this experience with journals and editing widens the proctor’s experience in the academic world and develops additional competencies that will widen one’s portfolio for a variety of careers in higher education.

Deadline

Rolling deadline, but preference given to applications submitted by May 15 for this year-long proctorship.

Responsibilities

The proctor will be responsible for

  • Working closely with the CLS Associate Director to learn the tools of the trade required for publishing such a copyediting and citation management
  • Editing and evaluating submissions in field of expertise
  • Hosting a weekly writing group and organizing workshops for graduate students
  • Preparing an article for submission to a journal of one’s choosing
  • Outreach to undergraduate journals in the languages and mentoring of CLS language ambassadors in the publication of their annual multilingual journal Polygot 

Structure

This proctorship will be one-year long and assumes a 17-20 hour work week per semester.  The CLS Associate Director for Graduate Programming will guide this proctorship.

Eligibility

  • Brown graduate students in good standing in a PhD program for which language teaching is required may apply any time beginning in their third year of the program. 
  • Preference will be given to graduate students pursuing the doctoral certificate in Language Pedagogy and Academic Engagement (LaPeAcE).

Funding and Award

Specific award funding and structure will be determined by the student’s home department, CLS, the graduate school, and the Dean of Faculty.

  1. Cover Letter/ Statement of Purpose of no more than two pages outlining your interest in the proctorship and any previous relevant experience
  2. Current CV
  3. A letter of support that acknowledges good academic standing from your Director of Graduate Studies 



Graduate students interested in this or any one of the CLS proctorships should make their interest known to the CLS Associate Director (Jeremy_Lehnen@Brown.edu) as early as possible in order to start planning the timing of the proctorship. Graduate Students interested in pursuing the Doctoral Certificate in Language Pedagogy and Academic Engagement are required to complete an Expanded Academic Experience (EAE) that is structured to prepare graduate students for the many layers of service that are often required in an academic position.  This proctorship fulfills the requirement.
