The Center for Language Studies is pleased to offer the CLS Graduate Student Proctorship in Community Engagement and Language Learning.
This proctorship offers the opportunity for one graduate student a semester to research, explore and integrate topics of social justice and community engagement into the language curriculum and undergraduate experience.
The proctor will initially conduct research on the latest trends in language learning relating to community engagement and social justice. The proctor will become knowledgeable about the field of community-based language learning and its intersection with the teaching of intercultural competence and languages.
Deadlines
Rolling deadline, but preference given to applications submitted by May 15 or November 15.
Responsibilities
The proctor will
- Conduct research related to recent trends in teaching languages through the lens of social justice
- Facilitate workshops and provide support for undergraduates completing internships that require using languages other than English with community members
- Design a syllabus and create teaching materials that include the integration of community engagement.
Structure
This proctorship will be one-semester long and assumes a 17-20 hour work week. The CLS Director will guide this proctorship.
Eligibility
- Brown graduate students in good standing in a PhD program for which language teaching is required may apply any time beginning in their third year of the program.
- Successful completion of the language pedagogy seminar LANG2900 or a comparable course and teaching experience at Brown is required.
- Preference will be given to graduate students pursuing the doctoral certificate in Language Pedagogy and Academic Engagement (LaPeAcE).
Funding and Award
Specific award funding and structure will be determined by the student’s home department, CLS, the graduate school, and the Dean of Faculty.

- Cover Letter/ Statement of Purpose of no more than two pages outlining your interest in the proctorship and any previous relevant experience
- Current CV
- A letter of support that acknowledges good academic standing from your Director of Graduate Studies
Graduate students interested in this or any one of the CLS proctorships should make their interest known to the CLS Associate Director (Jeremy_Lehnen@Brown.edu) as early as possible in order to start planning the timing of the proctorship. Graduate Students interested in pursuing the Doctoral Certificate in Language Pedagogy and Academic Engagement are required to complete an Expanded Academic Experience that is structured to prepare graduate students for the many layers of service that are often required in an academic position. This proctorship fulfills the requirement.
